With the passing of Patrick Stewart, I have been rewatching a lot of his old work. Obviously this means a lot of Star Trek, particularly TNG. But I’ve also been enjoying one particularly weird and brilliant footnote in his long and wonderful career. Blunt Talk, a sitcom about a whose life is out of control gives Stewart a chance to stretch his comedic chops. The always out of control Walter Blunt contrasts wonderfully with the always in control Jean-Luc Picard. Darkly delightful, dirty, and irreverent fun is the order of the day on this show.
The interplay between Kirk and Spock in “The Devil in the Dark” is fascinating.
Kirk: I want this creature killed on sight. I will lose no more men. Spock: It’s such a pity to see such a unique creature perish. Perhaps we could try to capture it? Kirk when he actually encounters the creature: Maybe we can talk it. Spock upon seeing Kirk with the creature: Kill it Jim! Kill it now!
Funny how Spock lets the logical veil slip when he thinks Kirk might be in danger.

So I’ve seen a couple of theories trying to tie the “Space Baby” from “Tomorrow’s Enterprise” to The Prophets from DS9 or to the Progenitors. Let me start by saying that I’m perfectly fine with this episode being its own thing and not a tribute to something else in the #StarTrek universe.
Having said that, here’s my theory. I noticed that the “Midwives” who were delivering the Space Baby have a musical language. You know who else has a musical language? M’hanit, the mysterious comet from “Children of the Comet.” Or at least the temple on surface of M’hanit had a musical language. What if the superstitious space monks had a point? Maybe the Space Baby is meant to be an arbiter like the comet M’hanit which brings new life to the rest of the universe.
For the record, I’ve delivered more babies than anyone in this room. Right? And I shouldn’t be doing this?

In “The Corbomite Maneuver,” it is implied that Spock is not aware of poker. In “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” Spock is so catty about losing to Uhura on a bluff, it feels like he knows and hates the game intensely.

I’ve had the #Kelvinverse Enterprise-A for a while in Star Trek: Fleet Command. It’s a fun and beautiful ship. It kind of makes me wonder what another Kelvin timeline movie would look like.
