Klingon nerd!

Seriously though, Jay-Den Kraag is another interesting addition to #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy. Typically most Klingons are warriors and Jay-Den is clearly not that with his bird watching hobby and interest in medicine.

Wow. Introducing the bridge crew. That’s something that differentiates #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy from #StarTrekDiscovery.

Heh, nonconsensual haircut. In #StarTrekDiscovery, Michael Burnham started wearing long braided hair when she went to 32nd century. I would always joke that she was wearing Programmable Matter extensions. The fact that you can completely change a person’s clothes and even hair in an instant in #StarfleetAcademy is another example of how magical Progammable Matter can be. It’s at least as big of a leap as replicators were in TNG.

The Jem’Hadar / Klingon hybrid drill sargeant in #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy is pretty cool. Would she be called a Kling’Hadar or would it be considered offensive? And how exactly do you get Jem’Hadar / Klingon hybrids anyway? Afterall in DS9 the Jem’Hadar were an all male race of clones. Possible theories:

  1. Odo made some changes when returned to the Great Link.
  2. The Jem’Hadar who didn’t need Ketracel White that Dr. Bashir discovered wasn’t the only one. These Jem’Hadar escaped the Dominion. 2a. These Jem’Hadar can only reproduce by hybridizing with other alien races.

It’s interesting to note that the first Jem’Hadar we ever meet is disappointed by his first encounter with Alpha Quadrant species because he really wanted to meet a Klingon. We haven’t really seen many Klingons in 32nd century Star Trek and out of the three we see here, two are hydrids. And the third is very different from Klingons we usually see in Star Trek. Lura Thok is an exciting addition Star Trek lore and I hope that Starfleet Academy explores her backstory and ancestry.

Beware of people who say that they want to make the Star Trek future real. According to Star Trek, the Eugenics Wars, the Second Civil War, and World War III will all happen within the next few decades.

That was rather fanservice-y intro. Given that it’s #StarTrek’s 60th anniversary, I’ll allow it. #StarTrekStarfleetAcademy

Clicks Communicator and Clicks Power Keyboard

daringfireball.net/2026/01/c…

Was Dennis Duffy Right? Is Technology Cyclical?

Clicks Keyboard has been trying to bring back keyboards for a couple of years now. As a fan of old Palm devices like the Palm Pre, I do miss keyboards on my phone and did buy the Pixel version of their keyboard case. I wouldn’t say it made me more productive but it was a lot of fun to use. Or at least it was until Star Trek: Fleet Command decided that it couldn’t deal with physical keyboards (whether they were attached via USB like the Clicks Keyboard or via Bluetooth) when they updated their game engine. Since I tend to play that game a lot on my Pixel 9, it didn’t make much sense to continue using it since as much fun as it was, the Clicks Keyboard makes my Pixel huge.

Still it’s nice to see Clicks keep trying to bring phone keyboards back. And are double and even tripling down with not one but two keyboard devices. The Clicks Power Keyboard attaches to your phone via magsafe and works via Bluetooth it’s an attractively ungainly little beast which appeals to my gadget nerdery. It has a battery to power the keyboard and charge your phone. And it can even switch between different devices with its bluetooth connection.

Clicks is even trying to revive the Blackberry with their Clicks Communicator. I was a Palm user back in the day, not a Blackberry addict but it’s still a pretty appealing device which bring together messages from a variety of apps into one screen and provides an improved keyboard for responding to these messages. They are positioning it as a “companion device” to be used along your regular smartphone. It also adds features like a microSD card reader and 3.5mm headphone jack which have been banished from more traditional smartphones.

Clicks was founded by Michael Fisher, a Youtuber who calls himself, “Mr. Mobile” and whose channel includes a long running retrospective series called, “When Phones Were Fun.” Whatever happens with his company, I can at least applaud Mr. Fisher for trying to make phones fun again.
