A Class M planet, capable of supporting human life, dead center in a quasarlike system which must be putting out an enormous amount of radiation? Eh, it’s the 60s not much was known about quasars in those days.
What’s much more interesting is the conflict. Spock’s logical stoicism vs the shuttle crews' emotionalism and borderline racism on the surface of the planet, is mirrored by a conflict between Captain Kirk who wants to rescue his friends and crew vs a hardassed bureaucrat who wants to leave them behind. It’s a complete 180% mirroring too as the shuttle crews' emotion drives them to rebel against Spock while Kirk’s emotion drives him to continue the rescue mission.

It occurred to me recently that the president in #Idiocracy is Hispanic. Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho - that’s two Spanish names, including the surname. So in my mind President Camacho is Hispanic in that movie.
The thing that really makes “The Serene Squall” work so well as an episode of #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds is Jesse James Keitel’s performance. She goes from being a sensitive psychologist to a sociopathic pirate all the while being a master manipulater.
So speaking as someone who has done a little cooking in his day, I wonder if Captain Pike’s prowess as a cook - even with only the resources of a pirate’s galley to work with - is realistic. I mean, you can have all the skill in the world and delicious recipes but there’s only so much you can do with barely edible ingredients and a busted oven.

While #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds version of the Gorn have been compared to the Xenomorphs from Alien, it occurs to me that there is another, more likely inspiration for SNW’s update to the classic guy in a rubber suit aliens. The Magog from Andromeda are very similar to the Gorn in the sense that they are intelligent aliens who are seen as deadly monsters. The Magog also infect their victims with their eggs in much the same way that the Gorn do. Interestingly enough, Andromeda was loosely based on a Gene Roddenberry script and developed by Robert Hewitt Wolfe, a Star Trek veteran who had written for both TNG and DS9.
I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don’t trust coincidences.
